The port of IJmuiden is home to an international ferry, oil platforms under repair, windmills under construction and fishermen bringing their precious cargo ashore. It is a phenomenal place, especially the area where the fish is processed, before it will be auctioned. Lots of activity in the early hours of the morning, but when noon strikes, the place will be relatively quiet, with only trucks, lorries and forklifts making noise. IJmuiden positions itself as rough around the edges (Large billboards near the beaches say it ‘Raw near the sea’), and that is well heard throughout this area.
I was lucky to be invited by Mr. Jaap Waasdorp, whose voice is featured in this episode. Jaap showed me and my friends Micheal Struis and Michel Campfens around, telling us about how fish comes ashore, what will be done before it is auctioned, and finally, how the auction actually works. After our visit, we realized that this is a business we only knew little about, but were intrigued to learn more.
This episode features the following sounds:
- Waves rolling into the south pier of IJmuiden (start to end)
- A ferry arriving from Newcastle, ship horns, police car, unloading of trucks (0:15-9:00)
- Announcement of the auction start (0:30)
- Mr. Jaap Waasdorp, explaining about the price of a case of sea bass, edited (1:35-2:30)
- Opening of a lock door, ship passing (2:40-7:30)
- The sound of windmills (3:50-6:50)
- Unloading fishing boats (4:10-7:30)
- Water dripping near the quay (5:05-9:20)
- Edited voice of Mr. Jaap Waasdorp, scraping sound right channel + windlike sound left channel (6:10-8:50)
- Processing hall, crates and voices of fishermen (5:20-9:05)
